Why go through vents and shafts?

The corridors and stairwells are where the zombies are. One guide puts it this way: the vents let you skip infected corridors and drop straight into apartments whose front doors are locked from the inside, without hunting for their keys. Arthur Hail, who has survived alone on floor 28, says the lift shafts are how he gets around.

How do you open a vent?

Vents are one-way more often than you expect. One player dropped down a vent into an apartment and was not sure he could get back; he got home only because that apartment’s doors were not locked. Check for a way back before every drop.

How do you get into the lift shaft?

The lifts stop when the power is cut, so the shafts are empty. To open the lift doors:

• Triangular key: in the toolbox in your apartment’s main room; it opens the elevator doors. Several players got stuck looking for it, so check the toolbox before you need it (keys).
• Lift landing key: found in a toolbox together with a screwdriver, hammer and screws. A blocked lift door on floor 27 said a lift landing key would release it.
• One guide says your first trip up to the roof has to be through the dark lift shaft with an elevator door tool and the wrench.

What is in the shaft?

• Ladders between floors. They do not run the whole height: one stops part-way, so you have to drop the rest, and one only reaches a landing you have to jump up to.
• Landing doors on some floors only: floor 20 has none, floor 19 opens onto the community kitchen, floor 27 has the valve room. Lift 2’s landing door opens onto floor 31 from the shaft side.
• A static line near Arthur’s floor that players picked up; what it is for has not been worked out.

There may be fall damage: one player worried about it but landed his drops without losing health. Climb down, not jump, when you can.

Safety checklist before a shaft trip

1. Water drunk, food eaten, fatigue low: you may be out longer than planned (health).
2. Light source with charge (lights).
3. Wrench and screwdriver in your inventory.
4. Know which ladder brings you back, and go before evening.

Getting stranded, and how players got back

One player dropped down a shaft section where the ladder ends and could only return by jumping up to a ledge, which worked. Another went down a vent into a flat and got home only because its doors were unlocked. If you are not sure, carry the triangular key and go back through a lift door instead.
